2017 album. ECM.
Our Overview.
American jazz guitarist, composer and bandleader, his work explores jazz fusion, post pop, free jazz, and avant-garde jazz. John Abercrombie – who has recorded as a leader for ECM since 1974 – returns with a second album by this quartet (John Abercrombie - guitar, Marc Copland - piano, Drew Gress - double bass, Joey Baron - drums).
Similar virtues of lyrical melody and harmonic/rhythmic subtlety are apparent with even more emphasis on the enduring values of song. The album showcases Abercrombie’s liquid phrasing and glowing tone, with melodic flow the guiding light. The album was recorded April 30 - May 2, 2016 at Avatar Studios, New York.
“You're just sort of searching for this 'thing' and sometimes you get it and sometimes you don't. All music is imperfect, but in jazz since you're improvising, at least the way I play, I'm trying to follow my train of thought in a solo.“ John Abercrombie.
Abercrombies’ playing style is "spare" and "understated," and he has continued to experiment and push the boundaries of jazz while retaining a firm grounding in jazz tradition.
