There was much more to Del Shannon, than ‘Runaway’, his massive hit from 1961. He played and recorded constantly up to his premature death in 1990 and there are many unreleased works that have never seen the light of day. This is one of them: an album he recorded in 1977 with his UK touring band ‘Smackee’.
In amongst the Shannon originals on the album there are four covers including ‘Black Is Black’, ‘Oh, Pretty Woman’, ‘Love Letters’ and ‘Today I Started Loving You Again’. He took the tapes back to California for mixing but he wasn’t satisfied with the results and consequently never released until now. These songs will be known to Shannon fanatics as they slipped out on bootleg tapes now should sound much better!
