Our Overview.
Belly formed in 1991, when Tanya Donelly split from Throwing Muses. Donelly had also been Kim Deal’s main partner on The Breeders first album ‘Pod’ from 1990. 4AD, the label that was home to her former groups picked up Belly and issued their first EP in 1992: ‘Slow Dust’. Just before the release of their debut album ‘Star’ in 1993, original bass player Fred Abong quit and was replaced by Gail Greenwood, who toured the record with the rest of the band, comprised of brothers Thomas and Chris Gorman on guitar and drums.
“Feed The Tree” was a hit single in the UK and the album struck No.2 in the album charts and was a surprise success which the band reacted against with their follow-up album ‘King’ which came out in 1995. Where the first album had been a dreamy but edgy affair the second was heavier and more direct. Tanya called time on the group the following year saying “there was a lot of negative stuff going on”. She went solo and between then and now put out four albums and some EPs. Belly reunited in 2016 with all the members of the second line-up.
The songs that ‘Dove’ comprises of are derived from new and improved song writing systems that crafted by the four band members hometowns. Through their consistent hard work and overall process to produce the ideal sound for their fans, their work ethic is what will arguably push them further on the road to success.
