Label Review.

1959-1962

Our Overview.

Joan Baez, who recently announced her retirement from live performance is best known as a “Protest” singer from the 1960s who for a short time was indelibly linked with the name Bob Dylan. However, unlike Bob who used the protest scene to launch his career, Joan put her money her mouth was and stuck to the cause - the list of movements and rallies she has supported over the years (see on Wikipedia) is nothing short of astonishing. To reward her decades of dedicated activism, Baez was honoured with the Spirit of Americana/Free Speech award at the 2008 Americana Music Honors & Awards.

However, before anyone knew who Dylan was, Baez was already an established star in the US Folk scene and this double CD collects the entire contents of her first two albums for the Vanguard label along with some others tracks that didn’t make the cut at the time plus some even earlier recordings from 1959.
