Our Overview.

Neil McSweeney the ever talented Scottish songwriter and performer, teacher on the MA Music Management Course at the University of Sheffield and occasional concert promoter in Sheffield in conjunction with Opus Independents. Who says of himself “I’m currently most interested in the future of the music industries, particularly the nature of sustainable digital revenue streams and the prospects for new native digital formats such as Virtual Reality, particularly in relation to promotion of and participation in traditional song.” Luckily he is still releasing the hard copy we all love here at Keymailorder.

This March sees the return of Sheffield-based Neil with his fourth album ‘A Coat Worth Hearing’. The album is the second release on the newly formed Hudson Records with production wizard Andy Bell at the helm, (he has worked his magicians wand for the likes of Seasick Steve, Bellowed, Jon Boden, Fay Hield, Andy Cutting, Eliza Carthy, Sam Sweeney and many more). McSweeney has toured extensively throughout the UK as well as in mainland Europe on his own and as support for the likes of Richard Hawley and Bellowhead.

His last album, Cargo (2013), was well received and the praise and anticipation around ‘A Coat Worth Wearing’ is heightened by hints at a marked development in his sound and approach. Its nine songs were conceived as a piece and subsequently recorded together, largely in full-band live-takes, over seven days in the beautiful Welsh countryside.

“Deeply felt, brooding songs rich in imagery.” The Guardian.

“Songs so subtle and well-crafted that you can’t help but be drawn in.” Drowned in Sound.

“Steelier than your average troubadour” Q Magazine.

"A songwriter of rare ability” R2 Magazine.
